Data Studies Minor
Our Data Studies minor provides students with skills and perspectives critical to joining a workforce seeking to maximize value from data. This makes graduates more marketable to employers by preparing them to examine the social, technical, and ethical implications of their work.
If you’re seeking further education in informatics and information science, this minor sets you apart from peers who train solely on the technical aspects of data. Enhance the value of the minor by pairing it with an appropriate major (e.g., Business, Computer Science, Health Science, Informatics, Media Arts and Science, Philosophy, Sociology, SPEA).

Required Courses (15 cr.)
- LIS-S201 Foundations of Data Studies (3 cr.)
- LIS-S202 Data Organization and Representation (3 cr.)
- INFO-I308 Information Representation (3 cr.)
- LIS-S305 Data Curation and Management (3 cr.)
- LIS-S301 Data Policy and Governance (3 cr.)
INFO-I308 Information Representation may be replaced with a different course on relational databases, such as:
- CIT 21400 Introduction to Data Management
- CSCI-N211 Introduction to Databases
- CSCI 44300 Database Systems
- HIM-M200 Database Design for Health Information Management
Students must earn a C or higher in each course to graduate with the Data Studies minor.
